PLAYING CAREER

A native of Opp, Alabama, Dubose was a star defender for the 1972-74 Crimson Tide teams that posted an overall record of 32-4, winning three SEC Championships and one national title. As a prep player at Opp, Mike was four-year letterman and captain as senior, while helping his team to a 30-8-3 mark. He also earned three letters in baseball. While at Alabama, Dubose had 129 primary tackles, 71 assists, 26 stops behind the line for 155 yards, 8 caused fumbles, six fumble recoveries and three pass break-ups. He was "SEC Lineman of the Week" in 1972 and 1973. Against Tennessee in 1972, he had 20 tackles, two behind the line for 17 yards and caused one fumble. His name still stands in the Tide record books, tied for 5th with most career tackles behind the line in a season (11 in 1973); most fumbles caused in a season and career (4 in 1972 and 8 in career) and tied for 2nd in most career fumbles recovered (6 in career).

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Dubose has supplied the NFL with five, first-round draft picks in Emanuel King, 1985; Jon Hand, 1986; Cornelius Bennett, 1987; John Copeland and Eric Curry in 1992.
• Both Bennett and Curry finished in the Top-10 in Heisman Trophy balloting.
• He was selected "SEC Working Coach of the Year" in 1991 and 1994.
• He has coached five players to All-America status while 10 have earned All-SEC honors. Cornelius Bennett won the Lombardi Award in 1986.
• In 1992, Eric Curry was one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award.
• During the Tide's 1992 National Championship season, Dubose helped tutor a defense that allowed just 55.0 yards a game rushing, easily a nation-leading mark.
• During that `92 season, Alabama allowed just five rushing touchdowns.
• Since Dubose returned to Alabama in 1990, the Tide's defense has been ranked 8th or better in rushing defense a total of four times, including the nation's best in 1992.

THE STORY BEHIND NO. 54

As a young child growing up in Opp, Ala., Mike Dubose's days were filled trying to emulate one of his heroes, Alabama's Lee Roy Jordan. Jordan grew up in Excel, Ala., about 40 miles from Dubose's home. Jordan set the Alabama record for tackles and went on to earn All-America status at the Capstone.

When Dubose first came to Alabama, he wore jersey No. 57. But the jersey he wanted was No. 54. That one belonged to Jordan, perhaps one of the Tide's most famous and popular players. After Jordan left Alabama, Tide coach Paul "Bear" Bryant gave No. 54 to only the best and Mike had his mind set on earning that jersey. By the time his junior year rolled around, Mike had earned number 54. "I was stunned when Coach Bryant gave me that number," Dubose remembered, "and I worked extremely hard to keep it."

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Born on January 5, 1953 in Opp, Alabama, Dubose is married to the former Polly Ann Martin, also of Opp. The couple has two children, Juli Ann and Michael, Jr.
