Gorgas House The Gorgas House was built in 1829 and is one of four structures on the campus of the University of Alabama to survive the Civil War. The house, situated in the center of the campus, is now a museum and is open for public tours. It was named for General Josiah Gorgas, president of the University in 1878, who became ill and was given the house by the Board of Trustees. His wife Amelia Gayle Gorgas, became the University's Librarian.
